Testing blood is of immense importance for a person whether the subject is

* Male or Female or
* If He or She had sexual relationship with a stranger or with a known person having very high social caliber or
* If he is supposed to have frequent relationships or multiple sexual partners or
* He Has or Had a history of some cut or wound or infection on the skin, particularly sexual areas or
* He is suffering from undue loss of weight, fevers, loose motions, extreme weakness and multiple skin diseases or tuberculosis.

No such person belonging to the above categories is free from venereal diseases, unless and otherwise it is proved by repeated blood tests, whatever treatment he undergoes or whatever improvement is achieved by him. All the future prospects of the patient his / her partner's marital life can turn in to an utter failure if he avoids this investigative part of the treatment. The main cause of treatment failure is an inadequate treatment by a doctor or by the patient. The moment patient is symptom free and if he has no external mark or a wound, he feels silly to continue the treatment. Mostly without consulting the Doctor, the treatment is stopped. Nobody, not even the most experience doctor can be sure whether the patient is suffering or whether he is free from venereal diseases or HIV, unless proved by repeated blood tests.

Testing blood only once is not 100 % sure of any presence or absence of the diseases. Blood tests should always be done by a qualified pathologist. The first tests done should be VDRL ( venereal disease research laboratory test ). VDRL gives the information about the existence of few common diseases like syphilis, gonorrhea etc. For viral infections like herpes there is a specific antibody test. For Aids there is HIV test (I & II ) which can be done by Elisa method and can be confirmed by Western Blot Test. Other sexual diseases and disorders have their respective tests. A single test at a time, whether it is VDRL or HIV, can not give 100 % results because if some infection is on the way, so two tests done at the interval of three months can give accurate information about the presence or absence of the disease, provided the patient doesn't have a fresh contact within these three months. Sometimes we get false positive results in VDRL and HIV infections, which are to be confirmed by further investigations.
